Forget Traditional Networking. Unlock Connections with The LNC Model.
The biggest mistake networkers make is failing to distinguish between learning, networking, and connecting when trying to build meaningful relationships.
Over the years, Iโve noticed how many professionals lack the skills and knowledge necessary for strategic networking.
Furthermore, even more struggle to develop and implement effective networking plans and activities.
And in the end, only a small fraction truly connect with those they do meet.
๐๐๐ The Story of the Three Little Pigs
Recently, I attended a large networking event with several associates. The presence of several hundred professionals created a wealth of opportunities.
Afterwards, we gathered to discuss the event results.
One associate boasted how easily he collected over 30 business cards. He adapted his networking strategy around a new iPhone business card scanning app that he just learned about.
Another associate proudly reported securing 4 sales appointments for the next week. He discovered a new selling method that dramatically changed his sales pitch.
A third associate humbly mentioned he wasnโt able to reach either of those goals. He had focused on having a deep conversation with two key executives he'd long sought to connect with over the years.
It reminded me of the story of the three little pigs. Taking your time to do things right is essential for building a successful network and career.
Can you speculate as to which of my associates had the most successful outcome?
Yep.
While the other two associates' efforts eventually failed to produce any results, the third one secured a long-term partnership with the two executives.
Why were the associates' results so different?
๐ด๐ก๐ข The LNC Model
Strategic networking goes beyond simply collecting contacts. It's about building meaningful relationships that can contribute to your professional goals.
Successful networking requires understanding the distinct levels and unique roles of learning, networking, and connecting.
Each stage fulfills a critical function and is fundamental to the process.
Most professionals have heard about the ABC Model - Always Be Closing.
To me, success is driven by the LNC Model - Always be Learning, Networking, and Connecting:
1. Learning to strategic network with research, planning, and strategy.
2. Networking to build and grow your network through participation and engagement.
3. Connecting to nurture meaningful relationships through giving and sharing.
Let's dig a little deeper โฆ
๐จโ๐ซ Learning
Now, more than ever, you need to stay educated on the unquiet methods and high-tech tools that can help you network and connect with professionals.
The benefits of staying educated on the values of strategic networking include:
Staying Relevant - The professional world is constantly evolving. Learning ensures you stay updated on industry trends, new technologies, and best practices. This knowledge makes you a more valuable connection, as you can offer informed insights and perspectives.
Expanding Your Expertise - Learning new skills and knowledge areas broadens your understanding and allows you to connect with a wider range of professionals. It also enables you to contribute more effectively to conversations and collaborations.
Gaining Key Insights - Through continuous learning, you can gain valuable insights from experts and thought leaders. This can help guide your strategic networking approach.
Learning involves keeping an open mind and studying the right strategies for networking.
๐ค Networking
Networking often emphasizes the act of expanding a circle of professional contacts (your โCircle of Influenceโ). It can be more transactional than connecting, focusing on exchanging information and making contacts for potential future benefits.
Strategic networking offers several key advantages, such as:
Building Relationships - Networking provides the possibility to connect with individuals who can offer support, guidance, and opportunities. It's about seeking to establish genuine relationships based on mutual respect and shared interests.
Creating Opportunities - A strong network can open doors to new job opportunities, collaborations, partnerships, and other valuable resources. It allows you to tap into the "hidden job market" and gain access to information that may not be publicly available.
Establishing Reciprocity - Effective networking involves giving as well as receiving. By offering your expertise and support to others, you build trust and create a foundation for reciprocal relationships.
Networking often emphasizes a wide range of contacts and prioritizes quantity over the depth of relationships.
๐ Connecting
Connecting emphasizes building genuine, meaningful relationships. It's about establishing deeper connections based on mutual interests, respect, and trust. It involves more personal engagement and a focus on building rapport.
The benefits of establishing professional connections include:
Facilitating Collaboration - Connecting people with shared interests or complementary skills can lead to valuable collaborations and partnerships. It positions you as a connector and strengthens your reputation as a valuable network member.
Building Community - Connecting with others fosters a sense of community and belonging within your industry or professional field. It provides a support system and allows you to share knowledge and experiences.
Improving Visibility - Connecting with people, and them with each other, increases your visibility. When people see you as a connector they will remember you.
Connecting is focused on the quality of contacts and meaningful relationships.
โ
The Takeaway
Effective strategic networking hinges on the LNC Model. In today's environment, implementing the model is vital for building strategic networks. Learning, networking, and connecting play interconnected and crucial roles.
Learning provides the substance and expertise that makes your network valuable.
Networking is often the initial step, the act of meeting and exchanging information.
Connecting is the process of nurturing those relationships and building deeper bonds. It is the act of facilitating interactions and creating synergy within your network.
By integrating these three elements, you can build a powerful and strategic network that supports your professional growth and success.
In simple terms, remember to โฆ
Learn to Network to Connect
Have a great weekend!
