Winters in Upstate New York can be unpredictable.

Some winters bring barely any snow. Others bury us.

This winter has been particularly harsh.

Most people just roll the dice and pay for snowplow contracts upfront with big deposits and no guarantee they’ll even need the service.

I learned the hard way. I prepaid $300 one year and the contractor only had to show up once. Ugh.

I always hoped for a better way… but nothing existed.

Then Jake showed up.

Networking to Build Connections

How did a young entrepreneur use simple relationships and not technology to turn a five-minute driveway job into a scalable local business?

Jake didn’t win because he had better software … he won because he already had access to people who trusted him. And the word got out …

What made this scalable wasn’t trucks, tools, or automation. It was the speed at which trust moved through Jake’s network. In local markets, one warm introduction can replace dozens of cold emails and ads. When your work solves a visible, everyday problem, your network becomes your distribution channel.

Jake also made referrals intentional and not accidental. He actively encouraged his clients to spread the word about his service and offered a simple discount to any customer who referred a new client. That small incentive gave people a reason to talk, and it turned everyday conversations into a predictable growth channel.

It often takes less than 5 minutes for Jake to plow a local residential driveway. The “five-minute job” itself was never the business … the real asset was the relationships that put him in front of repeat, high-value local buyers.

How did he do this?

• Providing extraordinary customer service (“he came out within 5 minutes”)

• Encouraging word-of-mouth advertising (crucial in local markets)

• Breaking the traditional rules (everyone else required prepaid plow contracts)

But Jake’s secret wasn’t to grow by hustling to add more people … he grew by removing friction.

Building an Efficient Local Operation

By only working with local customers and contacts in town, he eliminated travel time, complicated scheduling, and long back-and-forth communication. Jobs could be stacked geographically, handled quickly, and resolved in minutes instead of hours. That alone turned a small task into a high-margin operation.

Working locally also made coordination effortless. Clients were easy to reach, introductions happened in person, and referrals were usually within the same neighborhoods.

When something changed, Jake didn’t need long email chains or formal processes … a quick text or call solved it. That operational speed allowed him to take on more jobs per day without adding stress or overhead.

How many times have you paid for a service that should have been simple … but wasn’t?

Efficiency is what makes simple businesses scale.

The less time you spend driving, chasing approvals, and fixing miscommunication, the more capacity you create to serve additional customers.

Jake’s real system wasn’t software … it was geography. By staying hyper-local and designing his workflow around speed and repeatability, he built a business that could grow without getting more complicated.

Most snowplow companies make it complicated. They require prepaid contracts, long-term commitments, and steep deposits before even showing up.

Jake took the opposite approach. He only came when he was actually needed, on the client’s schedule, and charged fairly for each job.

That simplicity made him far more appealing than the traditional players and instantly lowered friction for new customers.

Being flexible wasn’t just about convenience … it was an efficiency multiplier. Jobs were completed exactly when required, without wasted time or overstaffing.

Clients knew they could rely on him without committing to something they might not need. That trust led to more repeat business and referrals, because people naturally share services that are easy, reliable, and hassle-free.

At a certain scale, effort stops being the bottleneck.

You can have a great audience, strong engagement, a repeatable growth engine, and a clear business model … and still stall.

Why?

Because the next level of growth usually requires:

• markets you don’t control

• relationships you don’t own

• and trust you haven’t earned yet in those circles

You can’t brute-force that.

You have to borrow it.

At 25 cities, my biggest opportunities aren’t incremental.

They’re structural.

Things like:

• multi-market sponsorships

• co-hosted netwinars and local events

• shared pipelines of vetted businesses

• and regional rollouts instead of city-by-city selling

Those opportunities only exist if the right organizations are embedded into the model.

No ad spend can create that.

No automation can replace that.

That’s why my next phase of growth isn’t about more tactics.

It’s about better strategic partners.

For years, I feared that the next great idea, the one breakthrough that could change my business or my life, was hidden in an email, a video, a podcast, or a LinkedIn post I had not yet seen or heard.

So I built what I thought was the perfect system:

• A redesigned Notion with 25 sections to save my research

• A “Save for Later” inbox folder that accumulated over 1,000 emails

• More than 100 podcasts waiting in my queue

• YouTube playlists for every business topic

• Hundreds of newsletters labeled and sorted

If something looked remotely useful, I saved it.

If something could be useful one day, I saved it.

My digital world became a library of “I’ll get to this someday.”

And the crazy part?

The system gave me the sense that I was learning and getting things done.

At the time, it seemed like a safeguard from missing out on the knowledge everyone else seemed to have.

In reality, the opposite was true.

😟 The Breaking Point

One morning, I opened my inbox and realized I had saved 147 things in the last 24 hours.

Not read.
Not watched.
Not listened to…

Just saved.

My “future self” was drowning in the homework my present self kept assigning.

Then it hit me…

I wasn’t afraid of missing information.

I feared the missed potential.

The ideas, insights, and opportunities that might never reach me.

Lost forever (or so it seemed).

Somewhere along the way, “learning” turned into hoarding.

I was building a digital wall of content so tall that it was blocking my own clarity.

Something had to change.

👉 The Shift

I didn’t fix it overnight.

But I did make one change that changed everything.

I replaced the FOMO mindset with FOLE (Fear of Lost Energy).

If something drained my attention, cluttered my brain, or required more energy than it was worth, it didn’t get saved.

I created new rules:

• If an email doesn’t give value in 10 seconds, delete.

• If a video doesn’t teach something in the first minute, close.

• If a post needs more than two scrolls, skip.

• If a resource isn’t actionable in this season of my life, archive it.

I simplified my Notion.
I collapsed my YouTube folders.
I emptied entire “read later” email folders without guilt.

And for the first time in years, I felt lighter.

Problem solved.

Or so I thought.

🔊 Fighting The Noise

Okay, so I set up a new system to organize my strategic thoughts, new content, and valuable information.

I’m all set… right?

Not quite.

Today’s professionals face a new reality…

AI noise and widespread false information.

All the AI tools, emails, and social feeds produce … slop.

Content that looks credible can be incomplete, biased, or just plain wrong.

And now, it comes in two forms:

1. Misinformation – incorrect or misleading information shared without ill intent.

2. Disinformation – information that is deliberately false, created to mislead.

The more I saved, the more exposed I became to AI-generated slop, rumors, exaggerated claims, and outright lies disguised as insight.

Every “must-read” article, every viral video, every LinkedIn post had the potential to waste hours, or worse, steer my thinking in the wrong direction.

My FOLE-driven systems were not feeding clarity, but confusion.

Ugh!

It was then that I realized that I don’t just need more curated information.

I needed better filters, stronger networks, and smarter systems.

If I could master my attention, I’d master my opportunities.

As we move into the New Year, a focus should be on building an information management system that brings clarity, not chaos.

A system that streamlines timely and valuable information while filtering out the noise and useless content that has become so rampant.

Easier said than done.

But a great goal for 2026!

✅ The Takeaway

The amount of content being created each year isn’t doubling … it’s compounding.

AI has lowered the cost of publishing to nearly zero. Everyone is now a creator. And every platform is fighting to keep your attention.

A typical business leader now receives:

• 121+ emails per day

• Dozens of Slack/Teams messages

• A nonstop stream of updates across social feeds

• AI summaries, alerts, reports, and “must-reads.”

No human brain was built for this kind of consumption.

Information overload does not come from how much exists. It comes from how responsible we feel and how willing we are to separate the valuable from the noise, the true from the false.

Today, I focus on learning the right things. The things that connect to who I am. The things that matter right now. The things that move me forward.

And for the first time in a long time, learning feels exciting instead of exhausting.

I stopped trying to learn everything.

Now I focus on learning the right things.

The things that connect to who I am, where I’m going, and what actually matters most to me.

And ironically?

Once I stopped saving everything, I finally had the space to start learning again.

I guess networking isn’t just for humans anymore.

The “real” Bob later explained he was too busy to attend himself but planned to follow up with the attendees after reviewing the “event notes” that his AI stand-in had prepared.

That’s when I realized how disruptive AI could be for genuine professionals who rely on building real connections.

🤴 Networking Is King, But AI Is Storming The Castle

I’d seen a lot in business, but appointing AI as CEO is a first.

A company called HeyBoss recently announced a new CEO … Astra, an agentic AI.

Astra, the new CEO, has taken on more responsibility over time, and has undergone “months” of testing. She first started out working on making the company’s online games better—helping refine visuals, optimize code, and accelerate production.

According to Gates, AI may replace doctors, teachers, mental health professionals, and other roles within the next decade.

If prestigious roles like doctors and teachers aren’t safe from AI, why should professional networking be any different?

😲 AI Is About to Change Networking Forever

Networking has always been about building relationships, trust, and human connection.

But now, artificial intelligence is stepping into the game, and it’s helping humans connect. In some cases, it may be able to do it better.

AI is already playing significant roles in business networking, such as:

• Handling administrative tasks - AI can automate tasks like scheduling, sending follow-up emails, and tracking progress, which allows professionals to spend more time on building relationships.

• Matching connections - AI algorithms can analyze data to help identify potential connections and recommend jobs or companies that align with a person’s skills, experience, and values.

• Providing insights - AI can analyze large datasets to provide key insights that can help guide networking strategies, making them more efficient and effective.

So, where does AI come up short?

🤖 Why AI Still Can’t Master Real Networking … Yet

Many believe that AI will not replace professional networkers because it lacks the human elements of trust, authenticity, and nuanced emotional connection that are crucial for building and maintaining relationships.

Impressive as it is, AI still falls short when it comes to human connection in the following ways:

• Trust and empathy - Human connection is built on trust, which stems from empathy and emotional intelligence, qualities that AI currently lacks.

• Authenticity - Real-life interactions involve subtle cues, such as body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice, which build a deeper level of connection and understanding that AI cannot replicate.

• Nuance - Human conversations are subtle and contextual in a way that artificial intelligence cannot fully capture, making human insight and connection irreplaceable for building a strong network.

Humans notice the small details and subtleties that algorithms miss, such as the right time to connect two professionals, or when a little humor can keep a conversation flowing.

Artificial Intelligence is good.

But not that good.

Yet.

✅ The Takeaway

The future of business networking involves a partnership between humans and AI, where professionals use AI tools to enhance their efficiency while prioritizing genuine human connection.

Those who can effectively combine the power of AI with strong interpersonal skills will be the most successful, as they will be able to build and maintain real, trust-based relationships in an increasingly automated world.

And what about those AI agents that showed up in my Zoom waiting room, each acting on behalf of a real professional?

I removed them.

After all, they weren’t going to help anyone.

They offered no value, insights, or ideas.

They weren’t … networking.

I’m just not ready to network with AI agents, robots, or anything that doesn’t have a heartbeat.

If it doesn’t have feelings, empathy, or a pulse, it’s not the kind of connection I value.

Call me old-fashioned, but we’re not that far into the AI era.

Not yet, at least.

The bottom line is that AI is a very powerful tool, but the heart of networking remains human. Your ability to listen, empathize, and connect will never be fully replaced. Instead, smart networkers will use AI to become even better at what humans do best.

Embrace AI, but don’t fear it. Your relationships, intuition, and ability to connect are irreplaceable.

As the number of participants poured into my Netwinar on Zoom, I became increasingly nervous.

The Zoom waiting room kept ticking up… 37, 45, 56. My excitement suddenly turned to panic. Soon, sixty people were ready to log into my netwinar, and I knew Zoom only allowed 50 Advanced Polls.

This wasn’t your typical Zoom webinar with hundreds of attendees. This was a netwinar (“net winner” = part webinar + part networking) where every participant needed time to speak, connect, and complete their polls for each other.

Needless to say… I was in trouble.

Luckily, a few loyal members agreed to delay their polls, giving me the chance to run the netwinar with polls for everyone else.

I let out a sigh of relief, even though I still had no idea what was about to unfold.

What I did know was that I had a rare chance to bring 50+ people together and try to give them one of the most memorable professional experiences of their lives.

And that’s exactly what happened…

💥 The Spark That Started It

While a netwinar is designed for success, it was the positive energy and supportive atmosphere that truly made this one stand out.

I won’t go into detail on what a netwinar is, as I covered that in my October 6th newsletter, Why Netwinars Beat Webinars Every Time. Nor will I dive into its origins or structure, which I explained in my June 28th newsletter, 223 Referrals in One Hour. Here’s How.

What I will highlight was a perfect storm of all the right elements coming together. From the moment we kicked off, I could tell this event was going to be different.

Why?

1. Everyone was fully present, alert, engaged, and ready to go.

2. Cameras were on, mics were ready, and people were leaning in as they waited for the event to start. No one was hiding behind screens or multitasking.

3. The mood was … fun! The excitement was palpable even over Zoom.

Once I encouraged everyone to share whatever felt right, the screen instantly came alive. I saw big smiles, positive reactions, and that ‘we’re in this together’ energy.

🪢 A Twist That Made It Work

Just before diving into the networking portion, I spelled out exactly what I expected from everyone:

“What you put into this is what you will get out of it.

You have to participate to get results.

It’s as simple as that!”

Up until then, I struggled with how much to share with guests after the event. While our members receive all the meeting data and poll results, I’d been burned before by visitors who turned that access into hard sells or persistent harassment. I knew I needed a system that would protect both my members and well-intentioned guests.

As I reviewed the data from past events before the meeting, I spotted a common trend right away. I noticed an intriguing pattern among the lurkers and those who did not fill out the polls. These were usually the attendees who came with the intent to sell or had other selfish motives rather than to contribute to the group. They made no effort to help others before or after the meeting.

It became clear that the final piece of the puzzle was accountability.

I took a deep breath, looked into the camera, and said, “If you’re a first-time guest and your goal is to sell or just lurk, this isn’t the meeting for you.”

Within moments, five people dropped off.

I saw it as addition by subtraction.

Then I added, “For everyone who actively participates (with the polls) and stays for the whole session, I’ll share the meeting’s poll results and insights.”

Everyone nodded in agreement.

Perfect.

Now we were ready to knock this netwinar out of the park.

💯 Final Steps That Delivered Big Results

In just about an hour, I witnessed a simple Netwinar transform into a powerhouse of business referrals, career advice, technical help, and real support.

At the start of the Zoom meeting, I chose a ‘speed networking’ format to manage the high turnout. But as the event unfolded, participants went above and beyond to support one another.

As I saw the polls light up for the first participant, I knew it would be a very special hour. Throughout the netwinar, I saw flashes of brilliant transitions and a variety of event structures unfold:

• Advisory Board - Some participants provided professional guidance and strategic perspectives to others.

• Referral Group - I saw countless business opportunities, both voiced aloud and submitted through the polls.

• Support Team - We witnessed hearts flying across the screen, virtual handclaps, and encouraging shoutouts throughout the event.

• Tech Support - A few attendees sought technical guidance, including one who asked, “Support for Windows 10 is ending, so how do I keep my older PCs that can’t upgrade to Windows 11 up to date?” (Spoiler: Someone did share a way to get an extra year of support for free.)

When I looked back on what came out of the netwinar, I was blown away by how much participants contributed and reflected on how many lives were changed:

• A participant received 31 referrals (a new record!).

• One referral led to an $18K contract a week after the meeting.

• A member finally connected with a company she’d pursued for 18 months.

• A guest highlighted an important 2026 accounting update that impacted everyone.

• Another guest asked for help for her graduate daughter, and 17 participants used the polls to offer advice and connections to help her.

The outcomes went well beyond what I imagined was possible.

✅ The Takeaway

I’ll admit that groups like BNI, LeTip, NIA, and many others have a proven model for generating steady referrals. Their strict weekly meetings and member exclusivity build trust and consistency.

However, that very structure can hold you back. It restricts the number of new people you meet and the connections you can build. These closed networking groups focus on keeping referrals in-house and enforcing member exclusivity, so you just won’t encounter a lot of fresh faces.

With the netwinar model, you can strengthen existing relationships with trusted contacts while always discovering new connections.

After this netwinar, I was blown away by the results.

Participants submitted 523 poll responses to help their fellow professionals.

And the comments said it all:

“I could see how this event could be life-changing.”

“I never experienced anything like it…”

“Wow! That was fun!”

I leaned back, grinning … I might just be onto something.

Before the pandemic, I created a space where people could truly connect.

I built a community that united people and fostered meaningful connections.

The community sparked thousands of sales leads, genuine connections, and personal referrals.

It thrived because members didn’t just participate and connect; they valued it deeply and poured their knowledge and energy back into it.

At $1,995 a year, the membership drew top-notch members and helped the community grow quickly.

🔄 2020: The Reset

In 2000, COVID struck, forcing dramatic changes and challenging everything I had built up to that point.

The pandemic reshaped the world and transformed the way business was done. My community-building efforts, rooted in in-person connections and face-to-face meetings, came to a halt.

I quickly realized that life after the pandemic had completely changed how businesses run and how people connect. Professionals weren’t just showing up to networking events or joining groups to find clients and partners anymore.

It wasn’t that simple anymore.

🔬 2025: The Experiment

Recently, I’ve been wanting to build a community again that helps people learn, connect, and grow.

The $1,995 membership did well before COVID, but I wasn’t sure that price still fit today’s world.

I decided to kick things off with a similar package, but at just $20 a month. I wanted to see if I could grow the community quickly with temporary promotional pricing.

It was an experiment that flopped.

After our kick-off event, here’s some of the feedback I got:

1. A prospect inquired whether their $20 membership fee would be refundable if they didn’t close the $25,000 deal they had generated through our community event.

2. One guest who received a record number of referrals proudly asked if that entitled her to a free membership.

3. A potential member said he would sign up on the spot if I cut the monthly membership fee from $20 to $10.

What happened?? Why were so many people haggling over the lower price? Why did the smaller fee suddenly feel like a big deal to so many?

Did people’s values change? Did my expectations change?

Actually, no, it was more complicated than that.

When you’re setting up a membership, there are plenty of other factors to consider …

🗓️ Monthly vs. Yearly

Deciding between a monthly vs. annual membership affects cash flow, member commitment, and retention. Here are the key factors to consider:

1. Cash Flow

• Monthly: Brings in smaller, recurring amounts and is good for steady, predictable income.

• Annual: Provides a lump sum upfront that helps with planning, investments, and covering bigger expenses.

2. Retention & Engagement

• Monthly: Requires ongoing efforts to keep members active; more frequent reminders and engagement needed.

• Annual: Members are likely to participate more consistently to “get their money’s worth.”

3. Administration & Marketing

• Monthly: You’ll handle more frequent billing, renewal reminders, and possible cancellations.

• Annual: Fewer transactions and administrative touchpoints, but you need to make the annual offer compelling.

4. Member Psychology

• Monthly: Low-risk option, appealing to new or cautious members.

• Annual: Creates a sense of exclusivity and investment as people value something they’ve paid for upfront.

💵 Free vs. Paid

Deciding between free vs. paid membership sets the whole tone of your community. Here are the main factors to weigh:

1. Purpose of the Community

• Free: Best if your main goal is reach, awareness, or lead generation.

• Paid: Best if your goal is depth, engagement, and sustainability.

2. Member Commitment

• Free: Low barrier, but members may drift away easily.

• Paid: Financial investment makes members more likely to show up, contribute, and stay.

3. Perceived Value

• Free: Risk of being seen as casual or low-value.

• Paid: Signals professionalism, exclusivity, and importance.

4. Growth Strategy

• Free: Easier to grow quickly and fill with numbers.

• Paid: Growth may be slower, but usually higher quality and stronger retention.

People naturally value what they pay for. A free membership can be overlooked or taken for granted, while even a small fee signals that it’s worth attention and commitment.

Investment drives commitment. When you pay, you participate.

Skin in the game creates engagement.

Will I bring back the $1,995 annual membership?

Honestly, probably not.

And the $20-a-month option?

Definitely not.

If anything, the future annual membership will probably land somewhere in the middle with no monthly option.

I feel like the sweet spot for membership is somewhere between $500 and $1,000 per year.

There I was, at a business event in Rochester, NY, seated right next to billionaire Tom Golisano, the founder of Paychex and one of the world’s most successful business leaders.

A man who had invested millions into local startups and small businesses.

Since we were both from Rochester, I expected an instant connection.

But it never came.

I froze. I didn’t say a word.

As the event ended and he began to pack up, he glanced at me with a smile.

“Hi,” he said, “I’m Tom Golisano. And you are?”

Panic set in, followed by silence.

After a long, awkward pause, I sheepishly mumbled, “Mike.”

“Nice to meet you, Mike,” he replied.

Then came the question every professional dreads but should always be prepared to answer, “So, what do you do, Mike? What’s your passion? What makes you different?”

“Well… I… umm…”

Again, I had nothing.

My mind went blank.

After what felt like drowning in slow motion, I blurted out:

“I manage a professional networking organization that facilitates connections across multiple platforms, bringing amazing value and exponential growth to our members through exceptional customer service and cutting-edge innovation.”

He gave a polite nod, and that was it.

Conversation over.

I could’ve sworn I saw a slight roll of his eyes.

He walked away shaking his head.

I felt sickened … and utterly crushed.

And then, thankfully, I woke up.

It had all been just a bad dream.

A very bad dream.

That’s when it hit me …

If I can’t clearly explain what I do and why it matters in one simple sentence, I could miss an opportunity that could change my life.

A definite “wake-up” call.

🤔 What Do I Do?

I’ve struggled with defining my business and what makes it “special” for a while now.

I find myself going back and forth between describing my work today and my goals for tomorrow.

I stumble between sharing my present role and my future plans.

And what I’ve done versus what I want to accomplish.

That’s when I landed on the description that felt just right…

I manage a strategic network of local business newsletters built to serve and connect the B2P community

… and this is why:

✔️ The description conveys a sense of a solid and compelling business model.

✔️Local newsletters have become a hot trend in the industry right now.

✔️ It has a bit of play on words (police “serve and protect the community”)

✔️ The network effect is still a thing.

✔️ It has a bit of mysticism. 🪄

After all, what does B2P even mean? (Business-to-Professional)

I reached out to other professionals to get their take on this new business identity, and the responses I received included …

• “That’s different!”

• “What’s B2P?”

• “Sounds intriguing… tell me more?”

Each answer triggered more questions, drawing us deeper into the conversation.

Mission accomplished.

✅ The Takeaway

It’s extremely important, arguably foundational, to be able to clearly define your business and its unique differences in one concise sentence. Here’s why:

1. First impressions are short - Whether you’re talking to a potential customer, investor, or partner, you often only have seconds before they decide if they’re interested. A sharp one-sentence definition makes that moment count.

2. Clarity builds confidence - If you can’t explain your business clearly, people will assume you don’t fully understand it yourself, and they’ll hesitate to trust or invest in it.

3. Differentiation is the hook - Your competitors probably say something similar to “we offer great service” or “we’re innovative.” A one-liner that instantly shows how you’re different is what sticks in someone’s mind after they’ve met 10 other companies that day.

4. It becomes a universal tool - Once you have this sentence, it works everywhere: networking events, email intros, website headers, pitch decks, and even social media bios.

Keep in mind, this is NOT your 60-second elevator speech or sales pitch!

You are not trying to pitch a product or service, or sell anything.

It’s just a clear way to explain what you do and why it matters.

And clarity isn’t just communication … it’s opportunity.

Open rates have long been a foundational metric in email marketing. They were used to measure how many recipients opened an email after it was delivered.

Introduced alongside early email tracking tools, open rates relied on a small, invisible tracking pixel embedded in the email that were triggered when a recipient opened the message and allowed images to load.

Here’s how an open rate is calculated:

Open Rate = (Unique Opens ÷ Emails Delivered) × 100

For example:
If you send 1,000 emails and 500 are opened, your open rate is 50%.

For years, marketers treated open rates as a key indicator of subject line effectiveness, audience interest, and overall campaign health.

When I first started publishing local newsletters a while back, I noticed my open rates steadily climbing.

31% … 37% … 45% … 52% … 60% … 73% …

Open rates became a key metric that I tracked relentlessly.

I found myself checking open rates like many people check their LinkedIn or Instagram accounts.

Why?

I figured if enough people were opening my emails, they had to be good.

But over time, as I observed my open rates approaching 80 - 90%, I realized it was more of a vanity metric than a sign of success.

So what happened?

⚠️ Open Rates Became Less Reliable

Open rates are less reliable now for several key reasons that are mostly tied to changes in technology and privacy policies:

• Privacy changes - Apple’s Mail Privacy Protection (and similar moves by others) inflate open rates even if no human sees it. MPP automatically preloads email content (including tracking pixels), which can falsely register an "open" even if the user never read the email.

• Blocking - Some email providers now block or strip tracking pixels used to detect opens.

• Forwarding - Forwarded emails, shared inboxes, or multiple devices can all trigger multiple opens from a single user, further muddying the data.

• Bot activity - Security scanners and bots can register as “opens.”

🔄 Better Metrics Are Now Available

Instead of open rates, many email marketers now focus more on:

• Click-through rate (CTR) - Who engages with your content

• Conversions - Signups, meetings booked, downloads, purchases, etc.

• Reply rate - Especially for B2B or community-focused newsletters.

• Engaged segments - Measure who opens and clicks over time.

• Subscriber retention/churn - How well you're keeping your audience over time

So, is it time to stop caring about open rates?

Are open rates officially dead?

📌 Why Open Rates Still Matter

Despite growing limitations from privacy protections like Apple Mail Privacy Protection, open rates still offer value. For example, they still provide:

1. First signal of interest - The open rate is the first indicator that your subject line, sender name, and timing are effective.

2. Relative comparisons - Even if absolute numbers are fuzzy, comparing open rates across campaigns still helps identify trends (e.g., best days, formats, or topics).

3. List health indicator - A sudden drop might signal deliverability issues or list fatigue.

Open rates can help you spot trends over time, compare subject line performance, and gauge audience interest at a high level.

While no longer a perfectly accurate metric, open rates remain a useful directional signal, especially when paired with other data points like clicks, replies, and conversions.

Open rates may be flawed, but they’re far from useless.

👍 Optimizing Open Rates

Open rates may not tell the full story, but they’re still the first signal that your message is reaching its audience.

Here are some effective ways to boost your open rates:

1. Craft irresistible subject lines - This is your first impression so it has to earn the open.

• Use curiosity, relevance, or urgency:
  “Who's hiring in St. Louis this month?” or “This local lead could change your year.”

• Personalize when possible:
  “Mike, your Boston network is growing fast”

• Test formats regularly:
  Emojis, questions, lists, cliffhangers, or power words (e.g. “Unlock,” “Proven,” “Revealed”)

A/B test subject lines weekly. Even small tweaks = big gains.

2. Build a habit with consistent send times - People open what they expect, so consistency builds trust.

• Send on the same day and time each week (e.g., Tuesday @ 9:30 AM)

• Over time, your audience anticipates the email and is more likely to open it

• Look at your own data: Some audiences prefer weekend or evening reads

3. Use a recognizable & trusted sender name - Your sender name often matters more than the subject line.

• Use a human name or brand + human combo
  “Mike at Local Connect” > “Local Connect Newsletter”

• Never switch sender names randomly

• Keep it consistent across all emails unless you're running a specific campaign

4. Segment & target your audience - The more relevant the email, the more likely it gets opened.

• Segment by location, interest, role, or behavior. For example, separate emails for “Boston tech professionals” vs. “DC job seekers”

• Suppress unengaged subscribers after 60–90 days

• Send “winback” emails to re-engage before dropping them

5. Optimize preheader text - This line supports the subject line, so don’t waste it.

• Give a reason to open: “Meet 3 networkers hiring in your area”

• Avoid generic filler like “View this in your browser”

• Think of it as your second subject line

Open rates still matter, but treat them as a directional metric and not an ultimate goal.

Since opens don’t always translate to clicks, conversions, or revenue, smart email marketers now focus on a variety of metrics and emerging trends over time.

Rather than obsessing over one number, look at changes across weeks and months.

When Bill Gates first met Warren Buffett in 1991, he wasn’t eager to connect. He expected a boring conversation with a traditional investor. Instead, Buffett asked thoughtful questions, listened carefully, and didn’t try to impress. I found myself running a Zoom meeting with nearly thirty total strangers.

Should I spend time highlighting the benefits of strategic networking?

Have you ever been in a Zoom meeting where half the cameras are off and the featured speaker just goes on and on? It can be boring and feel unproductive.

I’m convinced that active participation and getting everyone involved make an event truly successful.

How is this done?

By asking targeted questions that help guide participants on what to say.

I ask the same questions at every networking event.

1. Who are you and what do you do?

2. Do you have a key insight or useful tip you’d be willing to share?

3. How can we help you?

I often prompt each participant to share even more, so we can better understand how to support them. For example:

Are there any challenges you’re facing? Is your company looking for funding? Are you looking to hire?

Or, more simply, do you have a favor to ask? Do you want us to leave a review for you or provide feedback on your website?

The key is getting participants to open up … the more they open up, the easier it is for others to help them.

🥰 Inspire connection

There’s nothing simple about turning a group of strangers into a screen full of engaged participants.

I follow a few guidelines during my meetings that I’ve found encourage genuine engagement and put participants at ease:

• Depending on the situation, I shift between the roles of coach, facilitator, and moderator.

• I discourage sales pitches because they undermine genuine connection and tend to disengage the group.

• I focus on creating a positive atmosphere by inviting shout-outs, offering encouragement, and fostering curiosity through open questions.

The payoff?

A more engaged event full of energy and active participation.

Hearing a participant say, 'I’m feeling the love!' made it all worthwhile.

A few months back, I caught up with a colleague who I knew was hiring a senior director. I was surprised when he told me he had chosen someone other than the top candidate I expected.

I later learned that the leading candidate spoke to the receptionist in a dismissive manner and came across as somewhat disrespectful.

“He was the most qualified,” my friend said, grimacing. “But after the way he talked to Nancy? No chance in hell he was getting the job.”

Curious, I asked, “Who got the job?”

“Oh, I offered the job to Ryan,” he said with a smile.

I found out that Ryan had shown genuine kindness to an intern office worker while he was cleaning the bathrooms. He chatted with the boy about his favorite baseball team and encouraged him as the boy talked about how he was graduating from high school soon.

Without knowing it, Ryan had connected with and made a meaningful impression on someone who mattered more than he could have ever imagined.

The boss’s son.

"Oh," I smirked. "So that’s why he got the job?"

“No”, my friend replied defensively, “there were several things we had to consider."

I knew better.

Networking isn’t just about who you know.

It’s how we help everyone grow.

Networking with everyone is a big vision, but here are some key ways to approach it:

• Leverage technology - Use digital platforms on social media, professional networks like LinkedIn, virtual events, and messaging apps that break down geographic and time barriers. This makes it possible to connect people worldwide instantly.

• Create inclusive communities - Build spaces (online forums, groups, clubs) that welcome diverse backgrounds, industries, and interests so anyone can join, share, and collaborate.

• Share and promote open access - Make resources, contact info, and knowledge freely available where possible, so connections can grow organically without gatekeeping.

• Use AI and algorithms - Implement smart matchmaking algorithms that suggest connections based on interests, goals, or skills, scaling personalized networking across large groups.

The formula is simple: technology + inclusive community-building + meaningful engagement + smart tools + shared purpose - prejudices & biases = a network where everyone can connect.

Everywhere

Networking and connecting everywhere means breaking free from traditional limits like geography, time zones, and industry boundaries.

Here’s how you can do it effectively:

• Attend virtual events - Webinars, online conferences, and virtual networking events let you meet new contacts without leaving your desk, making it easy to connect worldwide.

• Build a strong online presence - Share your expertise regularly through posts, articles, or videos. When people see your value, they’ll want to connect regardless of location.

• Use tools for time-zone flexibility - Schedule meetings using tools like Calendly that automatically handle time zones so you can easily connect with people anywhere.

• Join global groups & communities - Find groups that align with your interests or industry on platforms like Facebook, Slack, or Discord. These groups often have members worldwide.

Connect everywhere by leading with empathy, offering value, reaching broadly but personalizing deeply, showing up at the right moments, and creating spaces where others can connect through you.

All At Once

Networking “all at once” sounds a bit paradoxical, but it can be done, especially with the right mix of technology, mindset, and systems.

Here are the ways to do it ALL AT ONCE:

🔵 A – Asynchronous networking - Use tools like Loom, voice notes, and newsletters to continuously reach people

🔵 L – Leverage communities - Go where your people already gather.

🔵 L – Layer systems - Systematize connection without losing the human touch.

🟢 A – Act as a hub, not just a spoke - Connect others, and they’ll never forget you.

🟢 T– Tell stories that scale - People don’t remember facts … they remember you.

🟣 O – Open loops & invitations - Pull people in with simple, low-friction invites.

🟣 N – Nurture what you start - The magic’s in the follow-up.

🟣 C – Curate your signal - You don’t need to talk to everyone, just the right ones.

🟣 E – Engage like a real human - You’re not networking with avatars … you’re connecting with people.

Networking with people all at once, such as reaching or connecting with a large group simultaneously, takes a mix of smart strategy and the right tools.

What’s one thing Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and Warren Buffet have in common?

They didn’t follow the rules.

Instead, they rewrote them to help create the “what’s next?” revolution.

In other words, they refused to follow trends or wait for change.

They became the change.

😬 Breaking the Mold

Revolutions aren’t started by those who follow the rules but rather by those who break them. And the real impact comes from those who break the rules with purpose, not just to disrupt, but to build something better.

Here’s how some of the most successful business innovators defied the rules:

• Bill Gates challenged the rules - Early on, it was believed that computing was only for the elite. While others built massive machines for corporations, he envisioned a computer on every desk and then made it happen.

• Steve Jobs broke the rules - Most believed tech companies should focus on their core products and services. By shifting Apple's focus from computers to consumer devices, he redefined entire industries, from music to mobile.

• Warren Buffett rewrote the rules - Mr. Buffett refused to follow rule #1 in the investment playbook with the “buy low, sell high” mantra. Instead, he rewrote the rulebook with a simple but powerful philosophy: buy great companies at undervalued prices and hold them for the long haul, a philosophy now known as value investing. He had a contrarian approach, buying when others are fearful and selling when others are greedy.

Instead of playing by the rules, they changed the game entirely.

✍️ Rewriting the Playbook

Smart disruption isn’t just breaking rules, it’s about rewriting them to create a better future. True rule breakers don’t just think outside the box. They imagine a whole new world beyond it.

There are many established norms with writing that I’m currently challenging. Some of the assumptions I’m testing include:

• “Write consistently” - I took a month off, not out of laziness, but to recharge. When I came back, I had something real to say with fresh thoughts and ideas.

• “Always be positive” - I shared raw and difficult situations in past newsletters. It got more gratitude and praise than I ever did for always trying to sound upbeat.

• “Stay in your lane” - I stepped outside of my networking realm to write about faith, fear, hope, and what really matters. The connection with my readers only deepened.

• “Follow the formula” - Although formulas can guide you, they can also box you in. For example, more and more thought leaders are encouraging writers to use some variation of the following formula when posting content:

1. Hook

2. State a problem

3. Agitate the situation

4. Provide a solution

5. CTA

This formula for posting content is sound advise but it doesn't work in every situation.

Sometimes, the magic happens when you just write freely and without a plan.

✅ The Takeaway

Behind every breakthrough is a person who dared to think differently. Every major leap forward began with someone willing to question the rules.

If rules are meant to be broken, why have them at all?

A few things worth keeping in mind:

• Not all rules are bad. The best rule breakers know which ones to break and which ones keep them grounded.

• Rules aren’t the enemy. It’s not rules that limit us but the wrong ones. Smart rule breakers push boundaries, not common sense. Bold doesn’t mean reckless. Smart rule breakers know the difference.

• Rules exist for order. Rules offer structure and a framework based on what has worked in the past. Rule breakers show us what will work in the future.

Simply put, rules exist for a reason. They are needed because they create order, provide guidance, and help us build on what works. Rules make things fairer, safer, and more predictable.

But rule breakers are important because they drive change, challenge outdated thinking, and push boundaries that lead to innovation.

Here are a few ways rule breakers change the world:

• They challenge complacency and inspire others to think differently.

• They spark innovation by challenging assumptions about what’s “impossible” or “impractical.”

• They drive progress in culture, products, and business models that redefine industries.

Those who challenge the rules often end up rewriting them for everyone else to follow.

Rule breakers aren’t reckless. They’re relentless in pursuit of something better.

They got me.

Again.

For the third time this year, I took the bait of a led magnet and lost.

The most recent incident happened on LinkedIn, where a prominent social media influencer offered a complete library of research on a very valuable topic I had been following.

I followed the instructions and then …

Nothing … nada … zilch.

The lead magnet did it’s job at getting a lead (me!)

But it failed to follow through with what it promised.

It made me realize that all the advancements in marketing and breakthroughs in technology won't overcome the absence of basic business fundamentals.

Ultimately, the success of a lead magnet comes down to execution and fulfillment.

But what exactly is a lead magnet?

Leads Magnets

A lead magnet is a free, valuable resource businesses or professionals offer on social media or websites in exchange for their contact information, usually an email address.

In today's digital landscape, getting someone's contact information (especially email) is the first step to building a relationship.

Example include:

1. Comprehensive reports

2. eBooks

3. Whitepapers

4. Case studies

5. Mini-courses

6. Useful tools

7. Free samples

8. Giveaways

9. Webinars

10. Free consultation

The type of lead magnet a person opts for can tell you a lot about their specific interests and where they are in their buying journey.

Once you have a lead's contact information, you can begin a lead nurturing process. This usually involves a series of automated emails (an email sequence) that provide more valuable content, answer common questions, address objections, and gradually introduce your solutions.

Compared to traditional advertising, lead magnets can be a highly cost-effective way to generate leads. They can transform casual social media browsers and passive website visitors into active prospects.

But there are many ways a lead magnet can go wrong …

😒 Bait and Wait

I recall my eagerness to obtain the research library offered by that respected social media influencer. Below was at the bottom of the social media post I responded to:

I meticulously followed the instructions. I liked the post, typed “edit” in the comments, and sent a connection request.

And then I waited … and waited … and waited.

As I later reviewed comments from the original post, it became clear that my experience with the offer wasn't unique.

I believe a lead magnet is your first opportunity to demonstrate your value and build trust. Failing to deliver on that initial promise can have a ripple effect that damages your brand and hinders your business growth.

Strike one.

😠 Bait and Inundate

Earlier in the year, I was enticed by another offer for a complimentary report on professional networking apps, only to discover it came with a 'processing fee.'

After I declined the offer, I was inundated with over a hundred emails, almost daily, that provide no unsubscribe link.

Even after requesting to be taken off their list a dozen times, the emails kept coming:

The emails originated from half a dozen different addresses, with fabricated names, and containing URL’s that had broken links.

Strike two.

🤥 Bait and Exaggerate

Some posts or advertising offer the "bait" with highly exaggerated or misleading claims. It often falls under the broader umbrella of "false advertising."

This typically involves the 'bait and switch' method.

This is a deceptive sales tactic where a seller advertises a desirable, often low-priced, product or service (the "bait") to attract customers.

However, when customers inquire about or attempt to purchase the advertised item, the seller then tries to dissuade them from buying it and instead pressures them into purchasing a different, typically more expensive, or inferior product or service (the "switch").

Recently, I responded to a product that was posted online at a discounted price. I responded that I was interested in purchasing it, only to be told that it was out-of-stock and the only alternative offered was a similar model at a much higher price.

Strike three.

✅ The Takeaway

Am I done taking the bait of lead magnets?

Probably not, but I am going to be more careful about who I engage with going forward.

The lead magnet strategy itself isn't the problem, but businesses can falter in its execution, turning a powerful tool into a regrettable waste of time and resources.

When executed strategically, with a clear understanding of the target audience's pain points and a strong follow-up plan, lead magnets remain one of the most effective and essential tools for lead generation and business growth.

Here's what I learned:

• Research the source - Before you download, quickly check out the website or company offering the lead magnet. Do they seem legitimate? Do they have a good reputation?

• Manage expectations - Understand that a lead magnet is often an entry point to a sales funnel. Expect follow-up emails, but ensure they are relevant and valuable.

• Prioritize value over "free" - Don't just download something because it's free. Evaluate if the content genuinely offers value and aligns with your needs.

• Unsubscribe - If you receive emails that are irrelevant, overly promotional, or feel like spam, unsubscribe immediately. Most reputable marketers make this easy.

By staying vigilant of red flags and taking proactive steps to protect your information, you can significantly reduce your exposure to bad lead magnets and ensure a more positive online experience.

Modern-day networkers seem driven by a mission that's proving to be impossible.

With over two decades of active business networking experience, I've gained significant insights, such as:

Business Networking is hard. Striking up conversations with strangers at networking events can be difficult and often awkward.

Online networking's harder. Succeeding with cold outreach, whether by email, online chats, or message boards, demands a rare blend of skill and patience.

Professional networking on social media platforms? Nearly impossible.

Why?

Delusional Goals

One reason networking on social media is problematic is because professionals have overly ambitious goals and are influenced by flawed presumptions that often lead to frustration.

For example, want to be successful on LinkedIn?

What I've seen recommended by some of the 'experts' is a significant time commitment:

• Two hours of posting

• One hour of commenting

• 30 minutes of liking, sharing, and reposting

• Then, return to your original posts to reply to the new comments

Anything else?

Oh yeah, commit to it daily.

Honestly, it sounds like a second job.

What's more, we're told that seeing any significant results could take up to 12 to 24 months.

It's also important to consider the numerous challenges of social media networking:

• Lacks emotional connection

• Inauthentic connections that include transactional approaches

• Difficulty standing out and engaging

• A large investment of time and effort

• Privacy concerns and vulnerability

Ugh, when did networking get so complex and time consuming?

And is this really networking?

Networker or Influencer

A second problem is that many of us confuse the role of an influencer with that of a networker.

Influencers are NOT generating connections.

They are generating followers.

They are NOT growing their personal network.

They are growing their social network.

They are NOT building genuine relationships.

They are building an audience.

Is it your goal to be a networker or influencer on the social media platforms?

Without a clear distinction between these two roles, developing the right social media strategy becomes an impossible mission.

✅ The Takeaway

Instead of chasing 'likes' or aiming to dominate social media, top networkers prioritize building relationships.

They leverage the platforms as a strategic tool to foster genuine connections and facilitate meaningful bonds with peers.

You won’t find the most successful networkers with the highest number of followers on social media.

Rather, you will spot them volunteering at Non-profits.

Or connecting like-minded professionals.

Or helping a struggling start-up.

The most successful networkers try to help others and build valuable relationships.

A New Year!

It's typically a time for new connections, endless possibilities, and groundbreaking opportunities.

But despite my excitement, I started this year in a rut and feeling disconnected. Instead of the high hopes I had for 2025, I quickly found myself stuck in the same unchanging business, uninspired routines, and familiar faces.

I desperately needed to escape the burnout and rediscover my drive … a way to get my groove back.

I needed a break.

My wife and I decided to take an incredible three-week journey across Europe with a travel group. Exploring ten countries and their diverse cultures in a whirlwind tour was incredibly revitalizing and refreshing. It was just what I needed.

The experience taught me three key lessons:

• Networking is a universal language.

• Authentic connecting fuels growth.

• Stepping away to recharge isn't optional, it's fundamental to sustained success.

  

My global travels introduced me to individuals from diverse backgrounds, offering a wealth of fresh and invaluable perspectives that significantly deepened my understanding of people.

Genuine connection is not merely advantageous … it's essential for a fulfilling life.

Though periods of disengagement are vital, the influence of networking extends universally.

Occasionally, stepping away from structured approaches is key to fostering true connections and personal growth.

So how do we do that?

🍹THE 21-Day Refresh

You don't have to take a three-week trip to a foreign country to refresh your mind and enrich your soul.

Here are some simple activities you can do:

• Take a short trip or staycation.

• Join a gym or explore new physical activities like hiking.

• Read a motivational book or watch an inspiring show.

• Write a short story or start journaling.

• Learn something new - take a course, signup for a class, etc.

• Commit to a digital detox by temporarily going offline.

• Volunteer by dedicating a few hours to a cause you care about. Giving back can be incredibly fulfilling.

• Practice mindfulness or meditation with 5-10 minutes of focused breathing or guided meditation.

• Find in a new hobby that excites you. Whether it's drawing, playing music, writing, or crafting, dedicate time to creative expression.

• Reach out to a loved one or connect with a friend or family member you haven't spoken to in a while.

Embracing any of these activities could invigorate you, refresh your outlook, and free you from your daily grind and mundane routines.

What kind of transformation can you expect in just 21 days?

1. Improved Creativity & Problem-Solving

Our brains aren't designed for sustained focus for extended periods of time.

Concentrating on single or repetitive tasks for too long depletes our attentional resources, leading to mental fatigue, decreased productivity, and poor decision-making.

Breaks allow the brain to rest and recharge, restoring focus and energy, making us more efficient upon returning to work.

A relaxed mind is more open to new ideas and less prone to rigid thinking.

2. New Viewpoints & Perspectives

Removing yourself from day-to-day routines allows you to see your business and career from new vantage points.

You can better identify stubborn issues, evaluate what's truly important versus just "busy work," and recognize opportunities you might have missed when immersed in the grind.

3. Renewed Passion & Motivation

It's easy to lose enthusiasm when work feels like a relentless cycle.

A break can rekindle the passion that initially drove you to start your career or business, reminding you of your "why" and restoring your drive.

Taking a break or a time to refresh isn’t a luxury but a necessity for optimal cognitive function.

It allow our brains to reset, make new connections, and return to tasks with renewed focus and a more expansive, creative mindset.

Over the years, I’ve noticed how many professionals lack the skills and knowledge necessary for strategic networking.

Furthermore, even more struggle to develop and implement effective networking plans and activities.

And in the end, only a small fraction truly connect with those they do meet.

🐖🐖🐖 The Story of the Three Little Pigs

Recently, I attended a large networking event with several associates. The presence of several hundred professionals created a wealth of opportunities.

Afterwards, we gathered to discuss the event results.

One associate boasted how easily he collected over 30 business cards. He adapted his networking strategy around a new iPhone business card scanning app that he just learned about.

Another associate proudly reported securing 4 sales appointments for the next week. He discovered a new selling method that dramatically changed his sales pitch.

A third associate humbly mentioned he wasn’t able to reach either of those goals. He had focused on having a deep conversation with two key executives he'd long sought to connect with over the years.

It reminded me of the story of the three little pigs. Taking your time to do things right is essential for building a successful network and career.

Can you speculate as to which of my associates had the most successful outcome?

Yep.

While the other two associates' efforts eventually failed to produce any results, the third one secured a long-term partnership with the two executives.

Why were the associates' results so different?

Strategic networking goes beyond simply collecting contacts. It's about building meaningful relationships that can contribute to your professional goals.

Successful networking requires understanding the distinct levels and unique roles of learning, networking, and connecting.

Each stage fulfills a critical function and is fundamental to the process.

Most professionals have heard about the ABC Model - Always Be Closing.

To me, success is driven by the LNC Model - Always be Learning, Networking, and Connecting:

1. Learning to strategic network with research, planning, and strategy.

2. Networking to build and grow your network through participation and engagement.

3. Connecting to nurture meaningful relationships through giving and sharing.

Now, more than ever, you need to stay educated on the unquiet methods and high-tech tools that can help you network and connect with professionals.

The benefits of staying educated on the values of strategic networking include:

• Staying Relevant - The professional world is constantly evolving. Learning ensures you stay updated on industry trends, new technologies, and best practices. This knowledge makes you a more valuable connection, as you can offer informed insights and perspectives.

• Expanding Your Expertise - Learning new skills and knowledge areas broadens your understanding and allows you to connect with a wider range of professionals. It also enables you to contribute more effectively to conversations and collaborations.

• Gaining Key Insights - Through continuous learning, you can gain valuable insights from experts and thought leaders. This can help guide your strategic networking approach.

Learning involves keeping an open mind and studying the right strategies for networking.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

Or, as I like to say, a connection a day keeps isolation at bay.

But who are the people we really want in our network?

I try to avoid using 'good' or 'bad' labels for professionals because people are complex, and everyone brings unique perspectives and potential.

Instead, I will distinguish between network connections that are fruitful and those that are less so.

In other words, let’s look at network connections in two ways: the good apples and the bad apples.

🍎 THE GOOD APPLES

We should prioritize nurturing specific 'apple' types to strengthen our networks.

For example, the fresh, shiny, and sweet apples.

Fresh Apples

Fresh perspectives are essential to the growth of our network.

A perfect example is college students.

Recently, a student studying AI joined my network.

He shared a wealth of information and provided key insights on the AI revolution.

We can unlock new potential by adding innovative thinkers to our network.

Shiny Apples

We should also value professionals who bring a positive and dynamic energy to our network.

These bright and charismatic individuals bring us:

• Inspiration - Their enthusiasm and optimistic outlook can motivate us to pursue our goals and overcome challenges.

• Energy boost - Interacting with lively individuals can uplift your mood and energy levels, making you more productive and engaged in your work.

• Resilience - They often possess a resilient mindset, which can help you navigate setbacks and maintain a positive attitude in difficult situations.

These professionals frequently have a vibrant and engaging presence.

Sweet Apples

We can never have enough of the genuinely nice and consistently positive members of our networking groups.

They're known for their kindness and optimism.

Working with them often results in:

• Stronger Relationships - Nice people are more likely to build genuine relationships that can lead to valuable connections and opportunities.

• Increased Referrals - Optimistic individuals are often more willing to share their network and provide referrals.

• Supportive Environment - A network of nice and optimistic people can provide a supportive environment that offers encouragement and guidance when needed.

Surrounding yourself with positive people can have a significantly positive impact on your own mindset and well-being.

Furthermore, building relationships with nice and optimistic people can contribute to a happier and more fulfilling life.

🍏 THE BAD APPLES

Crab Apples

Pessimism can create a discouraging atmosphere for everyone. A negative outlook has a ripple effect that can affect the entire group.

People with a negative mindset can hinder group progress.

Negativity is infectious, so choose your company wisely.

Rotten Apples

A rotten apple can spoil the whole barrel.

Professionals exhibiting misconduct, dishonesty, or a lack of ethical integrity should be avoided.

Your reputation can be tarnished by your associations. If you're seen associating with someone known for unethical behavior, others may assume you share those traits.

Furthermore, people may question your judgment and trustworthiness if you maintain relationships with dishonest individuals.

Poisonous Apples

In the worse-case scenario, corrupt professionals can destroy your entire network.

I once was part of a thriving networking group that was “poisoned” by a toxic member, leading to the downfall of the entire group.

Corrupt professionals exploit positions of trust to undermine the integrity and stability of a business network.

Their actions can have far-reaching consequences, including financial losses, reputational damage, legal liabilities, and the destruction of valuable business relationships.

🌳 APPLES DON’T FALL FAR FROM THE TREE

People tend to resemble their close associates, particularly those in their immediate professional or social circles.

Individuals within a network often share similar values, work ethics, and business practices. If you network with someone known for integrity and diligence, there's a higher likelihood that their connections will also possess those qualities.

Conversely, if you associate with individuals who have a poor reputation, others may assume you share those negative traits.

The result?

When a respected professional recommends someone, it's often assumed that the recommended individual will also be competent and reliable.

This is because people tend to refer others who reflect positively on themselves.

By focusing on building relationships with individuals who align with your values and goals, you can create a network that supports your professional growth.

Your network is a reflection of yourself and the quality of your connections can significantly impact your business success.

Picking the right connections in professional networking is crucial for career growth. It's not just about collecting a large number of contacts, but about building meaningful relationships with the right people.

This is how it is done:

• What do you want to achieve? Are you looking for mentorship, job opportunities, industry insights, or potential collaborations? Having clear goals will help you focus your networking efforts.

• Identify your target audience. Determine the types of professionals who can help you achieve your goals. This could include people in specific industries, roles, or with particular expertise.

Seek Out Relevant Individuals

• Industry professionals - Connect with people who are working in your field or in fields you aspire to enter. Attend industry events, conferences, and online forums.

• Mentors - Find experienced professionals who can provide guidance and support. Look for individuals who have achieved what you hope to achieve.

• Peers - Build relationships with people at a similar career stage. They can provide support, collaboration opportunities, and valuable insights.

• People with complementary skills - Networking with individuals who have skills that complement your own can lead to valuable collaborations and partnerships.

• Alumni networks - If you attended a university or college, leverage your alumni network. These connections often share a common bond and are willing to help fellow alumni.

Focus on Quality Over Quantity

• Build genuine relationships - Networking is about building authentic connections, not just exchanging business cards. Take the time to get to know people and understand their interests and goals.

• Offer value - Focus on how you can help others. Share your knowledge, expertise, and resources.

• Be selective - Prioritize building relationships with individuals who are genuinely interested in connecting and who align with your values and goals.

👀 FINDING THE APPLES OF MY EYE

The ability to discover and nurture high-value career connections is vital. For most of us, finding those few key connections that are extremely important to our careers is paramount.

Identifying exceptionally valuable connections involves a blend of strategic action and genuine relationship building.

Although the process is different for everyone, it’s worth the effort.
